In 2020, the U.S. Department of Education formally eliminated the distinction between “regional” and “national” accreditation, replacing it with a unified classification of recognized “institutional” or “programmatic” accreditors. Under current policy, institutions may no longer claim to be “regionally” or “nationally” accredited. Rather, the correct designation is simply that the institution is institutionally accredited by a recognized accrediting agency.Â
